What is the average size of a trapline. Is there a yearly cost to have one. The thought of having land that no one else can trap on is very interesting.

I am not sure about other provinces but in BC, they vary from 10 or 20 sqare miles to some huge ones that are several hundered square miles. You have to buy the line from the trapper who owns it, once you have bought it it is yours and all you have to buy is your trappin licence.

Traplines vary in size across Canada, some areas don't produce certain species ex. no wolverine hardly any beaver.etc

I dont know what the average size is in Ontario. Mine is about 70,000 acres or 110 square miles.
The only cost is your licence fee, (somewhere around $50) and whatever it cost you to harvest 75% of your beaver quota. ;D

After a quick calculation I get 2944 registered crown land trap lines (excluding private land lines in the south) in Ontario with the have an average size of 105.305 square miles.
The largest being one in the Moosonee District at 3450 square miles. The smallest ones are in central Ontario with some being less than 1 square mile. Just for comparison, the state of delaware is 2490 square miles and the province of PEI is 2100 square miles.
In general the Traplines in the NW of the Province are larger on average. With the ones near James bay being huge. Lots of them are over 1000 square miles.

I can get you a .kml file of the boundary if you use google earth. That goes for any other ontario trappers on this site. Send me a pm with your line number and email address. I will send you a kml file for your line.

Hi there, I'm a new trapper (still taking the course actually) in Ontario, and am keen to find out more information about available traplines in the province: 1. Is there a map available somewhere that I can view traplines in Ontario, and look for available traplines? 2. If no map, how do I find out about available traplines - particularly in the NE of the province (James Bay area)? 3. I also want to do some trapping in the Maple Island area NE of Parry Sound. I have access to some private land there that I would like to trap, but I would also like to try my hand at the lake our private land is on. It is my understanding I need to talk to the registered trapper for that area to get permission for this? How do I find out who is registered in an area? Google link: local.google.com/maps?q=maple+island,+on&hl=en&sll=46.49,-81.01&sspn=1.556223,2.469177&hnear=Maple+Island,+Parry+Sound+District,+Ontario,+Canada&t=m&z=15 Thanks, since I'm not yet a registered user of this board, you could send your response to: dave@lureofthenorth.com to ensure I get it. I appreciate the info! Dave

1. Is there a map available somewhere that I can view traplines in Ontario, and look for available traplines? No, but if you tell me the general area you are looking in I can make you something and email it to you. 2. If no map, how do I find out about available traplines - particularly in the NE of the province (James Bay area)? You will need to fill out a "Head Trapper" application (I believe you can find it online if not I can email you one) and send it to the proper contact in each MNR region and asked to be placed on their advertisement list for available trap-lines. Once your on the list you must renew each year to stay on it. If there are any vacant lines come available they send applications to the people on thier list. You apply, they add up the points and assign the line the person with the most points. ( I have some contacts for around here but I dont have many north of timmins.) First Nations also have a first right of refusal thing that they have to go through first. Once you pass your course you could get a licence to trap the private land. Trapping the lake?? I'm not sure about that one. I think you would likely need the Head trapper for that area sign you up as a helper, or at least sign some agreement with him. I can look into it. I think I know the trapper on that line but if it isnt his he will now who is trapping it.

Hi GTH,
Thanks for the replies (I asked the questions as Dmarrone above). I have finished the course, awaiting the paperwork going through now. I believe your answer re: question #3 is correct. I will have to contact the 01 trapper registered to the line and get permission from them to trap the lake. If you know who that is I would appreciate if you pass my information on to them. My email is above, or I can message you my phone number/ mailing address if preferred.
Thanks for the help, Dave
