On one forum awhile ago I saw a pix of a dead fall powerd snare, I think the fella how put the drawing up used some on martin but the would work on most any critter that you could get to climb a leanin log and pull a piece of bait. yeah! i have seen those, and even built one style back in my earlier days. The old time snares were mainly made with wire and they didn't close as easy, nor did they have sliding locks, as the snares we have today, so they had to make something power them to close the loop tight, and most of the time yank their front feet well off the ground. They also would sometimes use what they called a stop to break the neck. The animal would get caught and trigger the "spring", (whatever they could use for power, mostly bent over saplings) and they would get sucked up against something like a partially driven fence staple.... as they had ran the snare through it before they made the final set. had to be careful to have enough weight, but not too much, as de-capitation would happen.
