Usually when coon season opens the fur is still not prime. but this is the time you can rack up the coons. do you wait for the coons to prime up and risk the chance of an early freeze up or just set a date and trap.what do you guys do.

Really around here it varies year to year as to when they start getting prime enough to sell good. It seems a guy can almost tell what the winter is going to be like according to when the coons start moving hard to fatten up before they have to lay up. Some years it has happened before season began, other seasons a few weeks after. Last year by opening season the coons were big and virtually fully prime on opening day. The year before, we caught a few that were blue, and several that were no. 2 grade leather, and we actually caught several small kits.Thank goodness that all didn't last long and we were back on track. I don't know where you are from, but Kansas times the seasons with primness pretty good. It will all depend on your season dates and where you are located. Here, I trap hard right away, but the season is set up so I can!

Well our season opens the same time every year and our coons are not prime at the start, But a lot can change in a week, myself i would rather have half the amount if there prime. I wait till the 1 november and take my chances and every mild spell we get i'm ready.
