This is attractive to everything a dirthole set is. My firewood set is just a quick way of doing/making a dirthole. I like 3'-6' of chain, a piece of firewood aired out about 8"-12" across by 18"-24" long or so. Thinner it is longer you want it and vice versa. Theres no set dimensions but you want it heavy and bulky enough a yote etc can't run too far with it. Ive found 8"-10" thick to be about right unless the ground is soft and I can bury a little of the bottom of the firewood in the set. If the backing/log is too tall the smarter fox and yote may avoid it. I use a heavy eye bolt in the wood to hold the trap chain. The firewood drag doubles as your backing. I just dig a standard dirthole most times right up tight to the firewood log. I like to hide the chain under the log. Its a pretty simple set. One word of warning, if you spray any lure or urine on the wood let it air out a season or so before you burn it in a house or at a weiner roast etc, trust me. If theres snow where you can see the action and trails then I'll set the trails using this set and others. I can have several of these laying in the back of the truck and punch dirtholes with bulb planters and within 30 seconds to one minute have a set in.

When I first seen this post, i thought bwm was going to describe a set I use to call a burnt firewood ring set for fox!!!!!
The above is a scent post set or otherwise known as a type of flat set, right?

Any set that has a backing is not classed as a flat set .its a dirt hole set..i am going to go get a pic of a flat set right away just hold on a minute,

I bet! 3 different lures/baits I would guess? Even the most finicky would have to check it out. Is that a 1.5 or 1.75 stuck in the middle?

Some yotes work the set but we catch more fox, coon and badger then yotes I think? We set it in more open areas most times so greys dont work it there but when we set it back in the brush greys do work it good. We try to "bury" a little of the side of the "log" thats on the ground and I think it helps if its stabilized a little. Its just a quick set for us and a change up at times. Opening day we set alot of these and anytime thru the season where we are moving to a new farm and short on time or we've got good weather coming and want to snag alot critters in a short time. I'd have to look thru my journal again but if I remember right 2 of my 3 badger limit last year came from this set. If your moving to a new area and have limited time this set is a good one to drop and go to thin the possums and skunks quick so you can catch the canines, coons, badgers etc. As a yote set in a field edge etc I'd say its a 7 out of 10. Fox 9 out of 10 and same for the other critters that work it.
