Heres a set we use in/on the "toilet bowl" ponds. If theres not alot of sign you can take your boot and make a trench/smear vertically on the bank and set a foothold at the bottom in the water. Some add bait and/or lure to this set but usualy its not necessary. Just stake the trap out so the rat will drown or use gaurd style traps if the water is too shallow. We set several of these subdivision ponds last year with this set almost exclusively and used apples and sweet lures on some and really stacked the rats from this set. The fresh mud is a big draw and the lure and/or bait just adds to the appeal. Seems the set unbaited/lured works great for a few days but when the catch drops off hitting the set with lure or bait draws the last few rats in.

There is a young fella from PA who makes some lure that is awsome on these mock slide sets, I think BWM got some of his lure to test last season too. (cherry blossom) The guy has got some good things brewin, I am going to shoot him a pm on another site and ask him to come over here.

is this set better then the shallow pocket set?
I can vouch for the lure that he makes. I caught several cats using his stuff, and also some coons.

I have never set a pocket set yet so I can not say for sure, but they sure work good.

Yep Fuzz it was Cherry Blossom. I ran out and had to mix a copycat, his was good stuff. Yep Cat if your after rats this set draws them in. I think its the sight and odor of the fresh dirt/mud? Alot quicker then even a shallow pocket type set. Takes longer to stake the set then make it. If your state allows stakes, chain, wire etc but no trap(ours does) you can have everything ready to go opening day besides booting the bank and hooking the trap up to chain/wire and setting it. It will take coons too so you'll have to plan accordingly for that. We caught quite a few coons last year in this set on several farm ponds so it was good we staked them good and they were stoploss style traps.

Here in Ont. Canada I have a lot of streams which have very rocky bottoms. Rats use the rocks sticking above the water for toilets, and there is no place to stabilize a trap. I cut a hunk of sod and place it over the rock in which to bed my trap, works great green side up or down dosen't seem to matter. trap is wired to another rock placed in deeper water., ( can't drive in any stakes). Set also accounts for several mink each year, and the odd coon, so use a large enough rock. Concrete blocks work great as long as you don't have far to carry them in.You can also make the set on the concrete block.

I have heard that set works good Willow, I have only found one rock like that so far on my line, not much for rock around most of my ponds and streams. I may just set that rock like you said this fall and see if I can catch any thing with it.

Sounds like a very good set. I don't know that I have a lot of rats around, and dang few mink it, but if I got a trap to set I may as well try it eh? May get a surprise.
