my favrite is the 25/06, but any thing from a 243 up will work, heck I have shot lots with my 45/70 with cast slugs, it works geat too. It is mostly personal prefrance.

Im with Fuzz. With your northern heavy deer though I'd weigh on the side of shooting a little heavier round. I know Im gonna hear from the .243 fans but for me its a little light except for precison shooting from or over foodplots etc. Dont skip over the surplus rifles either. Some of them are excellent deer hunters. I like the old single shots and lever actions too and some of the oddball calibers that fed them. I think its best to match your cartridge, action and sighting system to how your hunting and what method your using.

;D You have opened a can of worms here, all over the whitetails range if you ask this question you will get answers endorsing everything from the 17 rem fireball to a 45-70. My personal favorite IS the 243, then the 2506, 308, 270, 3006. I have shot deer with all of them, and that is the order I rank them in. If headed anywhere in the whitetails range, I would take the first 3 rifles over the last 2 though.

I have every caliber mentioned except the 45/70. The first gun I always grab when hunting either whitetail or mule deer is the 270. It has good all around reach and good knock down power. I use only remington core lok 130 grain ammo. I hate having to track deer after they been shot. With my 270., They drop right where they were standing. I have made shots with the 270 from 26 feet to 502 yards. This is the best gun for me.

The 7mm mauser is a sweathart cartridge, growin up a friend of mine's family had one, it was an old sweadish mauser and shot like a dreem, we used it on every thing.

We had a 7x57 Mauser that was hard on deer, yotes and fox. Utah those half magazine .45/70's are out there but they aint cheap.
