What do you find the best,,is it worth buying lure or is a good smelly fish bait good enough/

I think for us the best and cheapest bait is what we make. I like Jack mackeral, honey, castor, fish oil (preferably sun rendard), and either a dab of ambrette musk oil or tonquin musk oil to top it off. Make a nice paste, it don't have to be perfect. Ambrette is much cheaper and can be subsituted with muskrat glands or musk. Hard to beat that mix for coon bait, and you can afford to make alot more for your money as opposed to buying it. This is kind of bait and lure all in one. That is my opinion anyway.
But to answer your question, I like something stronger to catch the animals attention. Whether there is something in the bait "spicing it up" or a baited set that you have lured, it works the same, but I definately like something more that just a plain old "unflavored" bait.
Later in the season when coons have been laid up, but start to come out in search of a mate, try this;
15-20 coon gall bladders from the liver. Let them get stale or a bit on the rancid side. Then add them to a quart of good strong coon urine and let them age and bind together, shake every so often. 1 month for ageing but longer is better.
