I had a friend helpin in the fur shead tonight and a rat that neaded skinnin so I thought I would show you fellas how I do it.
First thing I do is brush the rat to get rid of any burs and such in the fur, then hang the rat in my third hand.
Then I cut from ankle to ankle right across the rat
Next I free up the hide from around the legs and up to the bass of the tail, then I ring cut the tail anout 1 inch from the fur. Next I make a strait cut from the ring cut straight down the bell side of the tail, then pull the hide off the tail leavin 1 inch of leather on the fur.
Now I turn the rat inside out with my hand insid the fur, wiggle your fingers and push a bit and you can get the hide free to the back of the head.
Once that is done free up the hide from the front legs and cut the hide of at the wrist joint. Pull alittle and you will get to the ear butts, cut them free, then skin the head and becarful at the eyes as to not get a big eye hole, like some of mine do lol.
Cut the nose cartilage and the hide is now free from the carcus.
When I board the rat I use the little strip of tail leather I left on the back of the hide to put a push pin in to hold the hide on the board. I use a dull scraper to remove the fat, but be sure to leave as much of the sadle meat on the hide as you can, the auction houses like it this way. Then I trim the greesey skirt and the little leather strip off, and repin the back.
On the belly side I cut a viewing window from side to side so the grader has a nice clear view of your hide with out havin to open it up to grade it, and it leaves your hide lookin nice without any greesy fur or mess from the vent. They dont use this part of the fur any way so you dont get docked for removin it and it makes for a nice cleen lookin rat that is eazy for the grader to grade.
This is just how I do it, so I thought I would post this just to help some of the fellas startin out and maybe give others another way of lookin at rat skinnin,,,,The Rose Prairrie Way lol.
