I always wanted to learn how to trap but other than snarrin a few bunneys and gettin rid of some problem squerrils I never had the chance as a kid. After I finaly bought my quarter and got moved on to it, the beavers kept damin the road and the coyotes got so bad that the deer were startin to get run out of the area. So I sighned up for a trappers Ed course and got licenced, now I am mad I waited so long, to get started.

Farming. Had critters to get rid of. My older brother, my cousin, and I found my uncles old traps in the shed, so he showed us how to use them. Just took off from there. J.r. high and High school, I worked staff at the boy scout winter camp mountainman program, and helped teach the little traping course we had there.

I was the kind of child that always wanted to be outdoors mom ma could never get me inside,I am sure i fished every day that it wasn't raining,i seen mink -muskrat beaver foxes on my travels all the time. In the fall i set snares for rabbits set #0 traps for weasel & squirrel. I had a great childhood,My grandfather and uncle were trappers, however they didn't catch much they were still trappers, When they told me a good marten could bring $ 160 fox $ 70 to 100 mink $ 30 to 50 etc.I wanted to catch some of these animals, Marten could only be found in the northern ranges and i had no way to get there,,i seen mink in the stream that crosses threw the farm so i\d try my hand at them,,I am sure it took 2 months to catch my first mink. i snared some foxes, trapped some beaver and i was hooked, the next season i trapped mink i got 9 and kept getting better as the years went by,I bought a skidoo one fall for $ 90 and went north to trap marten & fisher,I spent a few nights beside a fire and walked many miles over skidoo break downs, but when i look back on it i say it was all good fun and i did make some money,If the trapping bug bites you theres no way to get rid of it ,,I know

Me and a friend out hunting rabbits & grouse seen a red fox running off he up and shoots.Fox runs a bit and falls over, Texas heart shot him,He takes the fox to a local trapper to sell and gets 50 or 60 dollars,so i said i would like to catch some fox. It all started there,I became a dirt hole trapper and got very good at it,when i learned that location was more important than the dirt hole its self i could regulary catch foxes

Love the location is everything remark Cam! So true!
When I was twelve, I seen some old traps in my grandpa's shed, and asked him about them. He said that my dad use to use them when he was a kid, and if I talked to dad to see if it was alright, that I could have some and try it. He said they were small and muskrats would be about all they would hold where we are at. I Rushed to the house and asked dad and he said he would show me how. So, I guess my Grandapa, and my Dad, were both trappers, and they got me on my way. I started trapping rats, possums, skunks, and a few coon. Even tried for mink and fox. I trapped for 5 seasons straight, but got side tracked with coon hunting and women! Oddly I never started trapping again until about 4yrs ago, with the exeption of one year I trapped a few coon behind the house I lived in.

I got started by the encouragement of Catmando, who has known me for 20+ years and knew that it was something that would get my attention. He would talk about it and before I knew it I was buying 3 Herters #2 c.s. traps off of ebay. Then they were quickly accompanied by a doz Bridger 1.5 coilsprings. I wasn't sure about all of this until opening day of '08. I took off 1/2 day from work and went to setting steel. I quickly realized that this was a valuable way to become "one with nature" in a way that I have never experienced before. So here I am now, a hopeless addict, and I am dragging my any of my kids that will follow down with me! Sounds like an AA meeting eh?
