Well, to make a long story short, Wyatt has been trying for, including this one, 3 seasons to bag his first spring turkey. I mean this kid has seen some classic hunts i'll tell you! He has in the past snap shot, shot to early, moved and spooked em...... you name it, it has happend to this kid! Of Course, Russ, my oldest, has always had the luck at turkeys even from the first opportunity, he was killing them. So there has been somewhat of some ''catching up to do", at least from Wyatt's perspective. He just gets such a hard adreneline rush from it, the poor boy has always done SOMETHING wrong............. This opening weekend wasn't much different! Youth season opened this last Fri, and we hunted Fri evening, Sat. morn, and this morning. We have been into the turkey from the get go, and it has been very entertaining with numerous close calls, but no mistakes,,,,,,,,,'till this morning! We set up nice and close to some gobs we had roosted (about 70 yrds max), and figured we were in the direction they would want to travel after they flew down based on the last patterns of the previous mornings. (We have been doing a little pre-season scouting and watching too!) We were fired-up pretty good, as there were 4-5 toms sounding off in a pretty small area against the south slope of the "dome" they were roosted near, deep in the hardwoods. They flew down, and 15 min. later a nice tom came in, spittin and drummin, gobbling and strutting like mad. The thing of course HAD to circle us to make it more of a challenge, but I was proud of Wyatt for sucsessfully moving around the opposite side of the tree base in order to get ready for the shot, while the gob was approaching. He never stopped once he commited, until he made us at 15 yrds. He started to move away, and Wyatt shot..........at NOTHING!!!! He or I have no idea where the pattern went, but it didn't go near the bird. Gone of course.( He uses a single). I got pretty un-happy as he didn't pay any heed to all the pre-instructions I had given him, and his crocadile tears said he wasn't happy either. So to the truck we went. By the truck, which was parked in the woods, some gobbles to the east rang. We called, they started coming and came all the way across a pond dam, past the truck, along the road trail, to the spot we had dove into, and right to Wyatts 20 ga. at less then 20 yrds. This time he took his time, but he seemed to be having some kind of attack listening to his breathing! The shot rang, and now he has that monkey off his back! A nice 2 yr old tom with a 9 3/4 '' beard, 1-in. spurs, and weighed 21.5 pounds. Two hot gobblin hunts in under an hour! Come to find out, Russ was having some good experiances with the turks with his bow, though he didn't get to shoot, he was still fired up too!
Here is W's tom
