The first man to make the dirt hole set surely didn't know he was going to pave the road for all trappers to fallow. our fore fathers fallowed the book step by set and it caught fur, there are so many variations of the dirt hole set today, and for good reason,we have modified, invented different strategies. plum turned the dirt hole set inside out and up side down. and its still catching fur.
so my advice is to any trapper wanting to catch canines with the dirt hole set is fallow the book step by step once you have it mastered then you can modifier to all other variations like the flat set etc, they all catch canines and can be quite rewarding.
The dirt hole is just as effective today as it was in the days of our fore fathers. just a few words of wisdom from a trapper who's been setting dirt holes with success for over 25 years.

We always talked about this set when we were in school. It was interesting how excited we became when we learned of this set and caught fur in it. At one time 30 years ago it was THE fox set. E.J. Dailey promoted it well. Of course with that set and his lure it outproduced most of the "old time" sets so his sales skyrocketed. Great tip for the youngsters or beginners here. Good advice for us "old salts" too.
