I left at 6 Am Friday morning for a little trip to SW Kansas. My purpose was to look over the Cimmaron National Grasslands to see if it looked feaseable to trap there for 8 Days this coming season. 7 hours and 438 miles later I arrived. I met up with a trapper from Oklahoma at the Motel. Also a trapper from SE Kansas rode down with me. The Cimmaron National Grasslands is somewhat of a misnomer after seeing it, in that there is not much grass there. It is like the Desert SW that I have seen on a couple of occasions. After looking around on Friday and half a day Saturday, we decided that it was worth the effort and expense to trap it. We set the dates and made reservation for Dec 7th through Dec 15th. We saw very little cat sign, but more coyote sign than I have ever seen on a piece of property. The grasslands covers 108 thousand acres, so there is plenty of room for three of us to trap for a week. We hope to be able to get in 100 traps and 100 plus snares over the first two days, Bedding will be real easy as it is mostly sand. Surprisingly, we tested pogo anchors up to 30 inches and found that even the 18 inch anchors would hold a yote. There will be lots of walking though. The road hardly ever gets closer than 1/4 mile to the river. I should be fit when I come back, that is if I survive the trip. Sorry for so few photos.
