How many coon sets do you put out and keep operating to catch 80 coon and for how long.

Well, I have been hoping for 100 coon per season for the last 2 seasons,...... we didn't make it. I'll give the info for both seasons to give you a more rounded idea.
08-09 we set out 2 separate lines, but did not run them at the same time, we set one, then pulled it, then set the second one. The first line had 27 traps, each an individual set, and we ran it for 12 days. Then we moved our line to the second spot. It had 17 traps that were individual sets, and it lasted 5 days until everything froze hard. We caught 82 total for the season but we picked up 6 of those, over the rest of the season trapping for 'cats. So we caught 76 in two and a half weeks.
09-10 this season we set out both lines to save a couple days of moving them, and decided to leave each until it froze. Ran both lines during the same time frame. We had a combined trap total of 38 traps for the lines, 17/21. We got to trap for exactly 2 weeks before it froze, and we caught 80 coons. We picked up 4 more through the rest of the season while trapping for 'cats, for a total of 84 coon.
Every year I trap nothing else but coons, and mount a full scale assault until the real bad weather hits and we get ice. I do nothing else but that, except for my full time job! Run the lines very early before work, and if need be, finish up after work. Honestly, it is a trying but enjoyable two weeks or so! When we get froze up, we get our cat sets out and start cat trapping. The animals naturally come slower, giving us time to work coon pelts out of the freezer, and to go retrieve all the coon traps we can, in between.

Do you ever run baited bucket sets while cat trappin? I have read that youcan get cats and coons in buckets.

I think you done real good to get 84 coon out of 38 traps. I get most of my coon in snares around grain fields. foot traps are not allowed for coon in Canada.

I know people who have caught them in buckets set for coon though. I know that one trick is to get the set up off the ground closer to the hieght of the cats head to make it nice and easy for it to poke its head in. I just tend to lean towards footholds for both cats and coon, so I don't usually use any bucket sets.

I'm not trying to be a stickler white , but we only got 80 on the 38 trap, lines. The other 4 we got in our cat traps as non target but welcome fur.
i have done some coon snaring in the past with good sucsess, and I use a handful of body grip traps set blind fashion and do really well in those too. BUT I DON'T KNOW IF I COULD STAND NOT USEING FOOTHOLDS ON COONS!!!!! I try not to use snares much anymore cause nafa tends to ding me pretty hard for the snare marks, body grip marks too if caught any further back then just behind the ears. That is why when I do use bg traps, I use 160's. Of the 38 traps we used, we only had a very few that were body grips, and all the rest were #11 dls, in blind sets on drowners. Got to have my footholds! Sorry you can't use them.
Thanks white, We are fortunate to have scored like that. we were happy even though we did not reach our goal.
Our best night was 14 coons. Report to Mod - Link to Post - Back to Top Logged
