Not much to report as I'm kind of between trapping seasons here..... :?: I have been finishing up what I hope is the last of the nuisance beaver and getting my land line out. I got up to the trapline on Saturday to get the majority of it set out. I got around 40 marten sets, 5 mink sets, a few lynx sets, few fisher sets and a few weasel boxes set up. I also added some more bait to my snare sites. No snares out yet because I dont really see much but fisher and ravens hitting them right now. I need to really add a boat load of snares next week, just didnt get time this week. Anyways, I had 4 marten boxes and one beaver trap out last week. result was a few weasels and this beaver. I have to clean these guys out before they wash out the road again. Marginal beaver habitat at best if you ask me. Here is the remake..........cant really see the trap but you get the idea. Hole in the dam, submerged trap out front. Freeezing rain all day...........I thought his was November?? I pulled the last of the nuisance beaver traps because as good as I can tell I got them all. Now on to bigger and better things next week with the land critters. Plus I want to hit on the otter if possible also.

I'm going to check Thursday. I'm not getting my hopes up because there sure wasn't a lot of marten sign to get excited about.

I got to the line on Saturday. Pretty cold day on the ATV. We need some snow so I can try my skidoo. A mink box near the edge of a beaver pond was one of the first traps I checked and I see this. My first thought was...."Stupid beavers!". Second thought was, "Stupid trapper!". I set too close to the waters edge last year too and I didnt learn obviously. Oh, well I got him out. I had a fisher messing with a few marten sets, when I saw this in my 220 set i thought I had him. Nope. Otter #1 (medium sized) I ended up getting a fisher but the wolves got him before i did. My camera batteries died, but I ended up with another otter, another marten and some weasels. This one was a good sized otter. Otter caught here( where I caught the beaver a few weeks back) Wolves seemed to have moved to a different area of the line, i hope they return because I added a few more handfuls of snares at my bait sites. I dont think the marten are there to be caught. I saw a few tracks here and there but not looking good. I will give it until a while longer but if I dont see any improvement I think i will pull my marten sets. Lynx and fox seem to be everywhere so maybe I will target them. Some of the marten tracks i did see were right near my sets but they paid zero attention to them... :?:

I'm not sure what to do about the marten. I dont want to over harvest if they are struggling to survive but I know last year I really didnt start to catch any until the snow got deep.
I think the results or the next check should give me a better idea.

Yeah, I guess you have to expect things like that when you are a weekend warrior and only check once a week. Eventually something is going to get eaten.

nice otter and marten you picked up Greg. That is to bad for sure about losing the fisher to the wolves. This year it was the fisher eating the marten for me.
Some times marten are slow to begin but like you say next trip should be an indicator. In past years i have also experienced slow starts for about 2 weeks then things took off. Lets hope that is your case also. Thanks for the great pics and update.

Here is a spot I hummed and hawed about last week. I was going to set it then I though I would wait for the water flow to come down a bit. As you can see I should have set it. I counted 4 sets of otter tracks coming up the creek and going into this pond here. Plus they were coming back out here and eating thier catch on the dark spot on the ice. Its set now!

I could only check traps on weekends most of my life, never had to much trouble, If you have 75 miles don't worry about catching a few marten, you will learn that some spots on your line will hold more marten than others, once you get it all figured out your catch rate will go up. good luck Greg.
