Checked traps Xmas eve. It started out pretty slow, One marten, one mink and few weasels. I'm having some problems with my sx120's that I painted. They are always fired and empty. With a tip from fuzz about filing the dog I hope to remedy that next weekend. There is nothing more exciting than seeing a fresh track heading down the trail towards your set. Got him in a snare-pen set I learned from tomcat and thewildnorth. Best part is now I have lynx meat to re-bait with. Not a very nice color but he is large and has a spotted belly. 46" (nose to base of tail) on the stretcher. My second one ever. Merry xmas to me. I like these lynx but fox are my favorite animal we can trap. I dont think anything compares to a January red fox. There is getting to be enough snow that I hope to start connecting with a few fox in the weeks to come. I hope to put out a pile of trail snares if the snow cooperates. I'm checking by myself next week on my unproven 1989 skidoo tundra. So if you dont here from me for a while its cause I'm still walking out to the road, getting matches and walking back in to burn the SOB. ;D

I wish I knew what the deal with the marten is. This 1 or 2 per check isn't exactly inspiring. The former 01 trapper of the line said he used to count on catching 1 marten per day (with 75 boxes out). So approximately 10% catch rate based on a weekly check. I have 35 boxes out and operating. One week I caught 3 so thats 10% but the rest have been one or 2 per week. I dont know if I'm in the wrong spots, or the marten just arent there to catch. When i was setting up my boxes quite often I would find one of the former 01's boxes right near where I was installing a new one.......so I think I'm in the right places. Maybe if I only count the boxes where I didnt have snapped and empty sx120's.....................probably right near my 10% then. Just kinda thinking out loud here. ;D

Could be the marten are not plentiful in the area you have set up. White had mentioned that earlier about marten not being every where on his line. I also had very little marten on the north part of my line this year. You should maybe look at doing different areas of your line or a least take a spin around on your sled to check and see if the marten are more abundant there. On the other hand maybe your population is down.

Yeah, I'm trapping the west side of the line (mostly jackpine re-forestation)the east side of the line is where my former 01 traditionally did well. They logged it heavily last winter so I thought I would let what ever marten that survived have a few years off. I planned on trying the southern section next year. The the west side the year after that. Then in 3 years time I will have the whole line setup as I want it.

Well this could be it. I checked traps yesterday and either I'm the worst marten trapper on the planet or they are not there to catch. The only good thing though out of the dozen or so marten I caught so far is all but one have been males and most of those juveniles. Even the female I caught was a juvenile. Here is another on of these big weasels I have been catching. at least 2 or 3 a week this big. 2 weeks ago I had a lynx walk under this marten box, last week he did it again, so I hung a snare and fenced him in a bit. 3 times a charm. Perfect neck catch, he didnt even tangle, the wire and cable where limp. Looks like the just gave one hard pull to set the lock then laid down and died.(micro lock on 1/16" 1x19) This one isnt a big as last weeks cat but his belly is almost clear and really spotted, even on his front legs. Anyways I hate to complain when I catch lynx but if next weeks check is no better I'm pulling traps.

Another nice cat, congrats. That sure is a large weasel. Did you ever get a chance to try out those ldl traps i brought down for you?

Yeah I have been using the ldl's. I really like them so far. I feel safer setting the belisles without a safety but the ldl is nice to handle too.
I haven't caught enough critter to say much about that but im sure that bar protecting the critter from the dog will work well.
I bought some savageau 2001-5's also.....I'm really liking them, but they are so strong they make even the belisles seem weak. I'm sure its power overkill and might lead to damage on smaller critters.
Time will tell.

Yes i would have to agree with you on that. To much power for the animal. In most cases i think there will be a lot of guard hair damage. That is why i never bought any.
