Well the weather has broken and the mild temps are back.I headed out to the new line today with the elder trapper who is giving me his line. We took my bike and the gear and set up 4 houses on one lake. Set some bait sets out around the feed bed with suspended 330's some entrance sets going into the house. Lots of marten , otter and cat sign that we seen. But that will have to happen next year. Will head back out Wednesday to check. Keep you posted.

I am so happy to see you back on the line . Now there is you and sneaky snake still trapping. I see on your entrance sets you have a bait stick also is that just a little re-assurance ? And did you have the runs marked? What sort or chisel are you running? Does it have a wooden handle? Sorry for all the questions but I thought I was the only one crazy enough to chase them through the ice! LoL

Sorry for all the questions but I thought I was the only one crazy enough to chase them through the ice! LoL Thanks everyone. i won't be at it to long. Just long enough to say i had taken some beaver and have fur credited to my name so the transfer goes ok. Yes Oldyote that bait is for added insurance on the entrance set. Just a little trick he uses and a new one i just learned. No the runs were not marked we just sounded for the thin ice with the ice chisel. Have 2 types of ice chisel, one is flat with angle edge and the other is a 3 sided come to a point chisel. The 3 sided chisel really cuts up the ice fast One has a wood handle and the other a pipe handle. I also use the chain saw and ice auger. The ice out around the feed bed was 18 to 20 inches thick and the ice auger makes quick work for making the initial holes. Then i use the chain saw and cut the ice between the holes and chisel the chunks. Takes about 2-3 minutes per hole. The old timer said he never thought about using the ice auger and commented it sure made fast work on opening holes. We both learned some thing yesterday . I did not get the chance to try my snare set up for beaver this time so maybe next trip. Me and beaver snaring are on a learning curve.

thanks Al. Yes he had a good time yesterday and i am happy for him. He really enjoyed the bike and the places it would go compared to his snow-machine. He kept repeating that over and over again. I'm hoping for a nice beaver catch on Wednesday and i'm thinking he is also .

Is the three sided one store bought? I figured that was a three sided when I was young they sold them and I think they where called blue lightning or some thing like that. I thinkl they were 60 bucks even back then (25 years or so) . Way out of my price range. I have been looking for one since!

Yes indeed they were blue lightning. I cannot find any where to purchase another one.Thinking of going down to basic machining and see if they cant make another one. They are worth the cost in my opinion. You are one of the few that still remember those out of many trappers that i talk with.

They sold them at the Ontario Trappers Assosiation depot in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan. I know a guy has one made out of a piece of 1 1/2 polsh rod ( the are the top rod you see on a pump jack, I think they are High in nickel) that a blacksmith hammered three sides to make a point .He keeps the point and the three edges SHARP. He says it works great but a black smith is hard to find! LoL.
